IE tabs use the Internet Explorer rendering engine.
This rendering engine cannot be accessed directly from the Chrome extension.
So we need a helper to talk between the Chrome extension and the rendering engine.
2. Does IE Tab always need to perform this extra step?
No. Chrome used to support a technology called NPAPI (Netscape Plugin API), which allowed extensions to access local computer resources.
The IE tab is used to access the Internet Explorer rendering engine using this feature.
But Chrome removed support for NPAPI, so we were forced to implement a new solution, and that solution required a separate helper executable.
From a technical perspective, the only real change is that our code has been moved from the NPAPI .DLL file to the auxiliary .EXE file.
