A historical introduction to the formation of the Twenty-Four Histories
During the Three Kingdoms period, it was already known as the "Three Histories" in society. "Three Histories" usually refers to "Historical Records", "Hanshu" and "Dongguan Hanji" written by Liu Zhen and others of the Eastern Han Dynasty. After the "Book of the Later Han" appeared, it replaced the "Dongguan Hanji" and was listed as one of the "Three Histories". The "Three Histories" plus "Three Kingdoms" are called the "First Four Histories".
In history, it is also known as the "Ten Histories", which is a collective name for the history books that record the ten dynasties of the Three Kingdoms, Jin Dynasty, Song, Qi, Liang, Chen, Northern Wei, Northern Qi, Northern Zhou, and Sui Dynasties. Later, the "History of Thirteen Generations" appeared. "History of the Thirteen Dynasties" includes "Historical Records", "Hanshu", "Later Hanshu" and "Ten Histories".
In the Song Dynasty, on the basis of the "Thirteen Histories", "Southern History", "Northern History", "New Tang Book" and "New History of the Five Dynasties" were added to form the "Seventeen Histories".
In the Ming Dynasty, "History of the Song Dynasty", "History of the Liao Dynasty", "History of the Jin Dynasty" and "History of the Yuan Dynasty" were added, collectively known as the "Twenty-One Histories". In the early years of Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty, "History of the Ming Dynasty" was published, together with the previous histories, under the general name "Twenty-Two Histories". Later, the "Old Book of Tang" was added and became the "Twenty-Three Histories".
Later, the "Old History of the Five Dynasties" compiled from the "Yongle Dadian" was also included in the official history. It was approved by Emperor Qianlong and was collectively called the "Twenty-Four Imperial Histories". The "Twenty-Four Imperial Histories" engraved by Wuying Palace from the fourth to the 49th year of Qianlong's reign is the most complete large-scale collection of ancient Chinese official history.
