What is EPEL?

EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux, Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) is a software warehouse project maintained by the Fedora team to provide RHEL/CentOS with software packages that they do not provide by default. This source is compatible with RHEL and derivatives like CentOS and Scientific Linux.

 Steps to download and install EPEL source on CentOS

We can easily use the yum command to obtain tens of thousands of software from the EPEL source that are not available on CentOS's own source. Most of the software packages provided by EPEL are based on their corresponding Fedora software packages and will not conflict with or replace the files of the enterprise Linux distribution version.

More details about the EPEL project can be obtained at the following website: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL

In the text I will show how to install EPEL sources under CentOS

Tip - There are many third-party sources for RHEL/CentOS systems, the more popular ones are RpmForge, RpmFusion, EPEL, Remi, etc.

However, it should be noted that if multiple third-party sources are added to the system, conflicts may arise - a software package can be obtained from multiple sources, and some sources will replace the system's basic software packages, which may cause unexpected problems. error. Rpmforge is known to conflict with EPEL.

For these problems we recommend adjusting the source priority or selectively installing sources, but this requires complex operations, and if you are not sure how to do it, we recommend that you only install a third-party source.

Install EPEL on CentOS

To install EPEL, we first need to download the EPEL rpm installation package.

The download pages for versions 6.x and 5.x under CentOS/RHEL are as follows

http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/i386/repoview/epel-release.html http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/i386/repoview/epel-release.html

The above URLs may be redirected to specific mirror sites to speed up downloads. This page contains download links that can directly obtain rpm packages. The direct download link is as follows:

http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/i386/epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release -5-4.noarch.rpm

Choose the correct download address based on your CentOS version.

Please note that EPEL's installation package is compiled independently, so it can be installed on 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

1. Confirm your CentOS version

First confirm your CentOS version with the following command

$ cat /etc/RedHat-release

CentOS release 6.4 (Final)

2. Download the EPEL rpm installation package

Now download the EPEL version corresponding to the CentOS version from the above address

$ wget http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/i386/epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm

3. Install EPEL

Install the EPEL package via the following command

$ sudo rpm -ivh epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm

or

$ sudo rpm -ivh epel-release*

4. Check the EPEL source

After installing the EPEL source, use the yum command to check whether it is added to the source list.

#yumrepolist

EPEL has been listed after the repo, and it shows that tens of thousands of software packages are provided, so EPEL has been installed on your CentOS.

The configuration of the EPEL source is installed in the /etc/yum.repos.d/epel.repo file.
