Older software, including older versions of Winrar, cannot decompress RAR 5.0 archives, so you need to consider compatibility issues if you plan on sending an archive to others.
WinRAR 5.0 adopts a new compression format, and the algorithm has also undergone major changes to optimize performance and details.

Change log

Main new changes in WinRAR 5.0:

1. New RAR 5.0 compressed file format. You can create RAR 5.0 archives using the "RAR 5.0" option in the archiving dialog or using the -ma switch in the command line.

2. Changes in RAR 5.0 compression algorithm:

a) The maximum compression dictionary in 64-bit WinRAR is increased to 1GB. The 32-bit WinRAR version can use a 256MB dictionary when creating compressed files. Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions can decompress compressed files of any dictionary size, including 1GB ones;

b) The default dictionary size of RAR 5.0 is 32MB, which results in a higher compression ratio and slower speed than RAR 4.x's 4MB. You can modify this value using the "Dictionary size" option or the -md<size> switch in the compression dialog selection;

3. Changes in RAR 5.0 compressed file format:

a) The file time is stored as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), replacing the previous local time, which makes the communication of files in different time zones more intuitive;

b) File names and compressed file comments are encoded in UTF-8.

4. RAR 5.0 recovery record is based on Reed-Solomon error correction code.

5. "Test" command verifies the validity of RAR 5.0 recovery records.

6. Changes in RAR 5.0 encryption algorithm.

7. RAR 5.0 compressed files can use 256-bit BLAKE2sp hash instead of 32-bit CRC32 as file checksum.

8. Removed features:

a) The reliability of the authentication function does not reach the required level and the function is removed;

b) RAR 5.0 compressed files do not support the switch -en (do not add the "end of compressed file" block) because the end of compressed file block is always added.

9. The "Set Password" command and the "Dictionary Size" option have been moved to the "General" page of the compression dialog.

10. You can use "Save symbolic links as links" in the "Advanced" dialog of the compression dialog box to save and restore NTFS symbolic links and parsing points as links, and their contents are not compressed.

11. Add decompression support for XZ compressed file format.

12. Changes in recovery volume handling in RAR 5.0 archive format.

13. Maximum path length in RAR and ZIP archives increased to 2048 characters.

14. If command line RAR detects that the user has entered a wrong password, it will return exit code 11.

15. The 'v' and 'l' commands display the compressed file name at the end of the line, instead of at the front as before.

16.The default character set for file lists in WinRAR and console RAR similar to 'rar a arcname @filelist' command is now ANSI.

17. WinRAR internal viewer can detect and display UTF-8 and UTF-16 little-endian encoded files.

18. UTF-16 little-endian encoding is used in RAR and WinRAR log files rar.log, so Unicode file names can be stored correctly in log files.

19. The command line 'r' (repair) command can have an additional target path parameter to define the target folder of the repaired archive.
