Microsoft has announced a new tweak to Windows 10 that will provide plans to hide the traditional Control Panel in future versions of the system.

For years, Microsoft has offered two different setup experiences on Windows 10. The new streamlined Settings app is now front and center, while the traditional Control Panel can still be found in the Start menu under Windows System > Control Panel.

In fact, a developer used a tool called Mach2 to scan the function switches in the Windows 10 preview version and found invalid function IDs related to the old version of the control panel, including HideSystemControlPanel, SystemControlPanelFileExplorerRedirect, and SystemControlPanelHotkeyRedirect, indicating that the application may soon become Hidden features on Windows 10.

While Windows 7-style apps are useful for pro users, Microsoft has beefed up Windows 10's Settings app over the years to integrate more options from the traditional Control Panel. The company hasn't announced any changes to this classic app, so it probably won't be going away anytime soon.

In fact, some users have repeatedly reported to Microsoft that the lack of consistency between options in the Control Panel and Windows 10 settings leads to confusion. Although there are many options provided in Windows "Settings", a considerable number of advanced options are still only provided in the "Control Panel". The relationship between the two is not the affiliation of subsets and collections, but a crossover.

It seems that Microsoft is finally trying to reduce the inconsistency of settings on Windows 10, and hiding system information in Control Panel may be the first step. These changes will likely go live in the Windows 10 20H2 update, which will be in the fourth quarter.
