1. Raster and vector DRC technology

Raster DRC converts a Gerber image into a raster bitmap and uses that bitmap to create the polygonal outline of the image. Raster DRC then checks for gaps and contacts between polygons. VectorDRC uses Gerber's description of an element's position, size, and shape to determine gaps and contacts between elements.

2. Raster and vector DRC error checking methods

The RasterDRC routine marks DRC errors with a user-definable color-coded graphic. You can use the specialized DRC error checking tool to go to the first, next, previous or last error of each error type. VectorDRC marks errors by inserting selected elements of special error marking D-codes into the file at the error location. You can check VectorDRC errors using the program's selection and inspection tools to find each element with the error tag DCode.

3. Advantages of grating DRC

RasterDRC technology can handle paintings and scratched images, while VectorDRC technology cannot. Images composed of many elements (such as a plane drawn with trajectories) do not necessarily slow down raster DRC, while these types of images do slow down vector DRC. Therefore, RasterDRC can be much faster than VectorDRC for files containing many elements. The RasterDRC error checking tool is easier to use than the VectorDRC method, and it doesn't involve inserting data into the file the way VectorDRC does. Raster DRC can perform screen print inspection, while VectorDRC cannot.

4. Advantages of Vector DRC

The time required to do vector DRC has more to do with the number of elements than with the physical size of the image or elements. Therefore, the larger board is not necessarily longer than the small board as long as they both have the same number of elements. The time required to perform raster DRC is more related to the number of pixels that must be checked rather than the number of elements. Therefore, large images that must be inspected at high resolution or images with very small parts may take longer than smaller or lower-resolution images, regardless of the number of elements involved. This means that VectorDRC is faster than RasterDRC on physically smaller boards.
