On February 18, Beijing time, xAI, an artificial intelligence start-up company founded by technology tycoon Elon Musk, released its latest version of a large model, Grok 3, which Musk declared to be "the smartest artificial intelligence on earth."
During the live broadcast that day, Musk and three engineers from xAI conducted a live demonstration. Grok 3 performed well on math, science, and programming benchmarks, outperforming Google’s Gemini, DeepSeek’s V3 model, Anthropic’s Claude, and OpenAI’s GPT-4o.
At the World Government Summit in Dubai last week, Musk said Grok 3 would surpass all existing artificial intelligence models. He emphasized that this chatbot can reflect on and correct its own mistakes through training with synthetic data, thereby achieving better logical consistency.
Musk pointed out: "The computing power of Grok 3 is more than 10 times that of Grok 2." He also said that the team is continuously improving the model every day. Currently, the Grok 3 beta version has been launched to X Premium users, and Musk expects users to have the best experience in about a week.
According to Musk, Grok 3 completed pre-training in early January. "Since then, we have been working hard to integrate inference capabilities into the current Grok 3 model. Although it is still in the early stages, the model is still being trained." Musk added. In addition, he revealed that xAI’s engineering team is training a mini version of the inference model. “The mini version takes longer to train, but in some cases outperforms even the Grok 3 inference model,” he said.
To train Grok 3, the xAI team doubled the data center capacity. The team said: "Back in April last year, Elon decided to create our own data center. We completed the construction of the data center in about four months and spent 122 days getting 100,000 GPUs up and running, which was a huge task. We believe this is the largest fully connected H100 cluster of its kind. But we didn't stop there."
The xAI team also revealed for the first time that they have launched the next phase of AI cluster construction. "To develop a model beyond Grok 3, one must excel in all aspects of deep learning science and engineering, so this is no easy task." The team said in the live broadcast, "We have begun research on the next generation AI cluster, whose performance will be about 5 times stronger than the current cluster."
The launch of Grok 3 comes at a critical juncture in the development of xAI. Currently, global companies are competing to develop more advanced and cost-effective artificial intelligence tools. xAI not only has to compete with Western giants such as OpenAI and Google, but also faces challenges from emerging Chinese artificial intelligence startups such as DeepSeek.
In China, DeepSeek’s model has been able to achieve performance similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT with less computing power. The company is actively recruiting talent to further expand its capabilities. DeepSeek’s rapid growth is prompting its competitors to reassess their strategies—OpenAI, for example, recently released its first inference model for free.
