Mozilla plans to improve the password management system on Firefox for Windows to better improve data security.

Firefox's password management feature is used to save users' accounts and passwords. This data can be imported from other browsers on the same device or synchronized from Firefox browsers on different devices.

In the new version after the change, Firefox Password Manager will require users to enter their Windows account password to perform further operations, such as viewing passwords or deleting password records, etc. However, this is only required if the user has not set a master password in the browser.

Users can also choose to set a Firefox master password and use the master password to perform password management operations. Starting in Firefox 76, Firefox will protect passwords for accounts that don't have a master password by interacting with Windows accounts.

Browsers like Chrome have been using a similar system. Unlike Firefox, Chrome doesn't support setting a master password.

This feature is currently available in Firefox 76 Nightly version. Firefox will pop up a dialog box asking for your Windows password or PIN, and requests such as Show Password, Copy Password, or Edit Password will prompt you.

According to ghacks reports, at this stage, every operation will generate a requirement to enter a Windows password. It's unclear whether Firefox will improve it in the future to only ask for passwords once per session, or only once within a certain time limit to save users the trouble of entering passwords back and forth.
