Software features
1. Improved workflow
Dreamweaver 8 introduces many neat improvements to help web designers work more efficiently. The tabbed interface of the document window places all open documents in one panel, just like Maxthon, the tabbed browser we often use. When switching documents, we only need to click the left mouse button once, so we no longer need to waste time and energy searching for open windows.
Additionally, users can now save an arrangement of panels as a "Workspace layout." This way users can save combinations of panels to suit different workflows. For example, users can create a workspace layout for data-driven web design, and then create a working layout for designing web pages with more CSS components. When designing these two different web pages, you can switch back and forth between the two layouts.
There are several new features that will be very attractive to designers: the magnification tool makes it easier to align images, select smaller objects, and view smaller text; position objects more precisely by dragging and dropping guides on the page; and let Dreamwerver display guides to represent the viewable area at different resolutions.
Support for Flash videos allows users to embed videos directly in web pages using VCR-like control. The creation and encoding of this type of video requires an additional program, such as Flash MX 2004.
2. Extended CSS support
In Dreamweaver MX 2004, CSS functionality has become very powerful. On this basis, Dreamweaver 8 provides stronger support in CSS. Dreamweaver 8 enhances the display of complex style sheet information, reducing the number of times you have to jump to a web browser to check your code design.
There are several visualization settings that provide very helpful ways of viewing complex CSS layouts. Users can outline CSS block-elements or highlight them with different background colors to quickly identify their position and size. Dreamweaver 8 also provides helpful tips for visualizing the effects of padding and margins on an element.
New media format support allows users to add styles that target specific devices. For example, you can add a style sheet that is only used for printing on a web page, or you can add a style sheet that is only used for display on a computer screen.
The CSS panel is now completely redesigned as a unified panel, bringing Dreamweaver MX 2004's many CSS panels into one place. In this way, the CSS panel becomes a more usable control panel. Use the CSS panel to quickly confirm styles, edit styles, and view styles applied to page elements (just like viewing paragraphs, images, and links).
Dreamweaver 8 adds a summary view to the CSS panel for quick confirmation of the CSS properties applied to the currently selected element. A simple list makes it easy to see which attribute in which style is applied to the currently selected element. The rules that control the combination of multiple CSS styles to format a web page are complex and confusing, so this feature will soon become an indispensable tool for web designers, freeing designers from complex CSS-based designs.
3. Fast file transfer
In the past, when transferring files to web servers, many web designers had to sit boredly and wait for the long transfer process. The new version finally introduces background FTP functionality. Previous versions of Dreamweaver made it impossible for users to use Dreamweaver to do other work when transferring files over the Internet. Now we can continue working on a site, editing and adding new pages, creating new styles, and so on, because Dreamweaver is now dutifully transferring files in the background.
In addition, Dreamweaver 8 provides a powerful file synchronization function, using this function users can ensure that the website content is always up to date.
4. Future support for XML/XSLT
Dreamweaver 8 inherits Macromedia's consistent tradition of continuing to provide user-friendly, visual tools to handle complex technologies. New XML/XSLT authoring capabilities simplify the process of formatting XML files for Web browsing. Users can create XSLT files and format them entirely using CSS, converting them into incomprehensible XML files into eye-catching web pages.
Dreamweaver 8 provides two methods to solve this problem: The client method allows users to quickly format an XML file for browsing in browsers like Safari, Firefox, IE 6 (Windows) (or any other browser that can read and display XML and XSLT files). If you want to reach a larger audience, you can use the dynamic page tool of Dreamweaver 8 to convert XML files into html files supported by any web browser using the power of PHP, ASP or other server-side languages that Dreamweaver understands.
