AutoKey software introduction
Compatibility with various distributions and keyboard layouts
I haven’t tested it on all Linux distributions and all different keyboard layouts. However, according to Autokey's developers, the core part of AutoKey is sending and receiving keyboard events through the X server. It supports multiple X interfaces, so should be compatible with any version of Linux running an X server. Full unicode support is provided and in theory it should work with any keyboard layout. In theory it should work on all Linux distributions and keyboard layouts.
AutoKey installation instructions
There are two variants of AutoKey: autokey-gtk, designed for GTK-based environments like GNOME, and autokey-qt, based on QT.
You can install either variant from the command line:
sudo dnf install autokey-gtk
After the installation is complete, use autokey-gtk (or autokey-qt) to run it.
AutoKey Instructions for Use
Before you can set up AutoKey to run in the background and perform actions automatically, you first need to configure it. Bring up the user interface (UI) configuration:
autokey-gtk -c
AutoKey provides some examples of preset configurations. You may want to keep them in reserve while you get familiar with the UI, but you can remove them as needed.
The left pane contains a folder-like hierarchy of phrases and scripts. A "phrase" represents the text you want AutoKey to enter. "Script" is the dynamic, programmatic equivalent that can be used Written in Python, and achieves essentially the same result as sending keyboard keystrokes to the active window.
The right pane builds and configures phrases and scripts.
Once you are satisfied with your configuration, you may want to automatically run AutoKey at login so you don't have to start it every time. You can do this by checking the box in the "Preferences" menu ("Edit -> Preferences") Configure "Automatically start on login".
