Getting started with Standard Notes is easy. But if you want to get the best out of your experience, you might want to know about some powerful features.
Get started with your free, encrypted sync account.
Your sync account allows you to access your notes no matter which device you're on. Creating a sync account also creates a strong encryption key from your password. Click "account" in the menu at the bottom left of the app to set up an account.
This will also automatically enable end-to-end encryption, meaning your notes will be encrypted on your device using your secret key before syncing to your online account. No one can decrypt your notes: We, not your ISP, or intrusive governments. This type of security also means that if you forget your password, you can't reset it. You can change it after logging in, but you can't say "I forgot" or you won't be able to access your data.
Download standard notes on all devices.
Use the desktop app for a powerful writing experience, or the mobile app to quickly and easily access your notes wherever you are.
Download regular backups of your data.
You can download a backup of all your notes through the app's Account menu. You can choose to download backup files in two formats:
Encrypted: Encrypted backup downloads a standard Notes-specific data file, which can be used to re-import into future standard notes or transfer your notes to another account. The files can also be decrypted offline using a decryption script, which you can download here.
Decrypt: On desktop and web, the decrypt option will download two things. The first is a zip file that contains all the comments in the clear text. These files do not contain standard Notes-specific metadata and are intended for your own records. The second is a separate backup file of Standard Notes that can be used for your own archive, or for re-importing Standard Notes in the future.
You can also set up the extension, which automatically backs up your encrypted data to Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive, and also saves an encryption history of your notes so you can revert to a previous version in case you mess up something.
