The new open source font jointly developed by Adobe and Google: Source Han Sans is a font that provides support for four languages: Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. Google named this new font, which Adobe calls "SiYuanHeiTi", "NotoSans CJK".
Google Blackboard’s introduction to this font:
People who speak Chinese, Japanese, and Korean account for about a quarter of the world's population. Google has been committed to providing high-quality information services to users in various languages around the world, including users in China, Japan and Korea. To this end, Google and Adobe have developed an excellent free font for users in China, Japan and South Korea: NotoSans CJK. It can bring people a pleasant and efficient information reading experience.
Noto SansCJK fully supports Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean in one font, and takes into account support for the writing conventions of the four languages. It is a bold font. For Simplified Chinese, it supports all Chinese characters specified in the Chinese national standard GB18030 and the "General Standard Chinese Character List" promulgated by the Ministry of Education in 2013.
Noto SansCJK's style is somewhere between modern and traditional. The design goal is a computer font that can be widely used for a variety of purposes, such as user interfaces for mobile phones, tablets, or desktops, web browsing, or e-book reading, etc. NotoSans CJK provides a total of 7 font weights: from Thin, Light, DemiLight, Regular, Medium, Bold to Black.
Chinese characters have a long history. Four languages are used: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean. It is called hanzi in Chinese, kanji in Japanese, and hanja in Korean. Although it originated from ancient Chinese glyphs, with the independent development and evolution in various places, writing conventions have changed in many ways.
For example, the picture below shows how the word "bone" is written in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese from left to right. You can notice that the strokes on the inside of the upper and lower parts are written differently. These differences are subtle but important. If ignored or mistaken, it is often considered to be unauthentic or even the wrong font. In Noto fonts, we try our best to provide glyphs for each language that comply with local writing standards or conventions within the limitations of font technology. For example, Traditional Chinese glyphs comply with the Traditional Chinese glyph standards promulgated by Taiwan’s education department. NotoSansCJK supports a total of 44,666 characters and 65,535 glyphs. 65,535 is the technical limit for the number of glyphs that a font file can contain.

This font was developed in partnership with Google and Adobe. Google named it Noto SansCJK as a member of Google's Noto font family. Adobe named it Source Han Sans, as a member of Adobe's Source font family. Adobe owns the copyright to the font design. Published font files can be used free of charge without restrictions. These font files use Apache License Version 2 (ApacheLicense, Version 2).
In the cooperation between the two parties, Google was greatly involved in defining the project direction and font characteristics, influencing the font design, providing local testing and expertise on the font design and documentation, and providing the funds to realize the font. Adobe has shown strong strength in font design and development, bringing solid font design experience, a lot of collaboration and automation technology. At the same time, we have also cooperated with a number of top font design companies in East Asia, including Changzhou Sinotype, Iwata and Sandoll. They designed and painted a large number of glyphs.
