HandBrake Highlights
Cross-platform support
Compatible with Windows, macOS and Linux systems, users can use it seamlessly on different devices.
Supports Docker deployment and can run on high-performance servers such as NAS.
Preset templates and custom options
Provide device preset configuration files (such as iPhone, Android, Apple TV) to quickly generate compatible formats.
Supports customizing parameters such as resolution, frame rate, bit rate, encoder, etc. to meet professional needs.
Video filters and optimization
Built-in deinterlacing, noise reduction, image cropping, scaling adjustment and other filters can optimize old videos or remove black borders.
Supports NTSC/PAL format parameter adjustment to adapt to different regional standards.
Subtitles and Chapter Management
Allows adding, removing or embedding subtitles, supporting closed subtitles (CEA-608) and external subtitles (.srt).
Keep video chapter information for easy jump viewing.
HandBrake Features
Hardware acceleration support
Supports hardware acceleration technologies such as Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), NVIDIA NVENC, and AMD VCE, significantly improving conversion speed.
Flexible coding modes
Provides constant quality (CRF) and average bit rate (CBR) control modes:
CRF mode: Recommended value is 20-23. The smaller the value, the higher the image quality (the larger the file size).
CBR mode: You can manually set the target bit rate (such as 1500 kbps), suitable for scenarios with strict volume requirements.
Based on FFmpeg framework
Inheriting the powerful decoding capabilities of FFmpeg, it supports all its video formats to ensure compatibility.
HandBrake function
Format conversion and compression
Supports input of almost all mainstream video formats (such as AVI, MOV, MPEG, TS, MKV, MP4, etc.) and outputs MP4, MKV, WebM and other standard formats.
Provides efficient video compression capabilities that can compress high-definition videos (such as 4K) into lightweight files suitable for network transmission while maintaining image quality.
Multi-track audio and video encoding
Integrate mainstream video encoders such as x264 (H.264), x265 (H.265), VP8/VP9, AV1, etc., and support audio encoding formats such as AAC, FLAC, AC3, and Opus.
Multiple audio tracks (such as multi-language dubbing) and third-party subtitle files (VobSub, SRT) are allowed to be retained, but the ASS/SSA subtitle format is not currently supported.
Batch processing and queue management
Supports adding multiple video files to the transcoding queue at the same time. Different parameters can be set for each file to achieve batch conversion.
Provides chapter mark segmentation function to facilitate the management of long videos.
HandBrake FAQ
Image quality deteriorates/blurs after transcoding
Reason:
Improper encoder selection (e.g. H.264 code rate is too low).
The CRF value is set too high (the larger the value, the worse the image quality).
Resolution forced scaling results in loss of detail.
Solution:
Adjust the CRF value: H.264 recommends 18-22, H.265 recommends 20-24 (the smaller the value, the higher the image quality).
Use constant quality mode: avoid average bit rate (CBR) over-compression.
Turn off scaling: Select Same as Source in the Dimensions tab.
Enable filter optimizations such as Sharpen or Denoise to balance image quality and noise.
HandBrake update log:
1. Optimize content
2. The details are more outstanding and bugs are gone.
