WinrarAn original compression algorithm is introduced. It provides high compression rates for executable files, object libraries, large text files, etc. WinRAR 4.20 makes better use of multi-processor cores, but increases memory usage in order to speed up compression. In addition, the speed of RAR's regular decompression algorithm has been slightly improved, and the creation and processing of recovery volumes can use multiple CPU cores to obtain higher processing speeds.

1. Changes in RAR compression:
a) RAR conventional compression algorithm is optimized to better utilize multi-processor cores. While improving certain speeds in single-processor mode, compression results are better in multi-core environments. Speed ​​improvements depend on data type and average file size. Multi-core utilization is better when compressing large files.
b) In order to achieve faster compression speed, memory usage has to be increased. The regular RAR compression algorithm allocates approximately 120 MB of memory, compared to 40 MB in WinRAR 4.11;
c) RAR text compression cannot efficiently utilize multiple CPU cores, so its performance is lower than regular compression in multi-processor environments. Regardless of the number of CPUs, it decompresses slower than the regular algorithm, so the text algorithm is disabled by default.
If you need to obtain the maximum compression ratio for plain text data, you can enable text compression in the "Advanced Compression Parameters" dialog box. Access it by clicking the "Compression..." button on the "Advanced" page of the compression dialog box. You can also permanently modify this option in the default compression configuration; text compression can be enabled in command line mode using the -mct switch;
d) The "fastest" (-m1) compression mode now also supports multi-processor cores. In 4.11 this mode can only use uniprocessor cores.
2. The speed of RAR's conventional decompression algorithm has been slightly improved, and the differences in Rar's compression algorithms will lead to differences. RAR decompression cannot use multiple processor cores, so its speed does not depend on the number of cores.
3. Changes to ZIP compression:
a) ZIP compression now supports multi-processor cores, resulting in significant performance improvements in multi-core environments. ZIP compression is also faster than 4.11 when using a single CPU;
b) Memory usage for ZIP compression increases to approximately 15 MB.
4. Recovery volume creation and processing can use multiple CPU cores for higher processing speed. However, the seek speed of a typical hard drive is a limiting factor for recovery volumes, so the effect is more pronounced when using an SSD.
5. The <thread> value of -mt<thread> is now allowed to be set to 1 - 32, instead of the previous 0-16.
6. The "Find File" command can find data in 7-Zip compressed files. Previous Find Files did not support the .7z compression format.
7. WinRAR and WinRAR self-extracting module no longer support Windows 2000.
8. The "Save current settings" button in the "Advanced Self-Extracting Options" dialog is now only available when converting an existing archive to a self-extracting file. This button save option only applies to converting to self-extracting files.
Only use the self-extracting options stored in the default compression configuration when creating or updating self-extracting files. For these operations, the options saved in the Advanced Self-Extracting Options dialog box are ignored.
