​​Technical details about how 3DS audio works

Audio processing and output are completed by a dedicated co-processor. These processors are called digital signal processors (DSP).

Games running on 3DS need to communicate with the DSP in order to play audio. They do this in two ways: through the DSP: DSP services and through shared memory areas. The DSP service provides service calls for initializing DSP hardware including firmware upload. The shared memory area is used for communication between the game on the CPU and the firmware on the DSP.

In order to simulate audio, the company must simulate the DSP::DSP service also understands the layout of the DSP's shared memory area. We have to understand what a write to a different address in a shared memory area looks like.
