How to use GIF Animator

Animation basics

Create an animation by displaying a series of overlapping frames in rapid succession. The image of each frame is only slightly different from the image before and after it. When enough of these frames are combined together, the differences between them create the illusion of motion when played back. In traditional animation, frames (also called "cels") are drawn and painted by hand. In recent years, the animation industry has shifted from traditional animation to computer-aided animation. While the concepts used to create animations are basically the same, the methods used vary greatly.

The key defining element of all animation, and movies in general, is the number of frames used to create the animation. The more frames a single animation contains, the smoother it will look in motion. Otherwise, their movements will appear more weird. In traditional animation, the number of frames becomes the length of the animation in seconds. However, in computer animation, the number of frames contributes to the final size of the animation file.

When creating animations on a computer, you must find a balance between animation quality and file size, both of which are affected by the number of animation frames. Defining the best trade-off points is never easy, but with careful planning and foresight you can create captivating animations that reduce the amount of disk space required.

How animated GIFs work

Animated GIFs take advantage of the GIF format's built-in capabilities to store and display multiple image files. Unlike traditional film, which is determined by the speed of the film, each image has an associated set of controls that dictate how, when, and how long the image appears on the screen.

Animations produced from GIF files are produced in exactly the same way as used in film: by rapidly displaying a series of similar images to create motion. While the effects of filmmaking and GIF animation methods vary greatly, the result is the same - a still image that comes to life before your eyes.

color palette

Each GIF image file contains an index table that defines the number of colors the image contains and the color represented by each index. Each color in the 256-color "spectrum" has its own unique identity, stored in the image's color index (palette). In a GIF file, each color in the index requires 3 or 4 bytes of data to define it (depending on how it was originally stored). An image with a 256-color palette can have a color index of up to 1024 bytes.

Animated GIFs have two color palettes: a global palette, which defines the use of colors in each image of the animation; and a local palette, which is unique for each frame in the file. Global palettes can be used to reduce overall file size when each frame uses nearly the same colors. When colors vary significantly from frame to frame, local palettes can be used to maintain overall image quality. However, it does increase file size.
