The upper-level knowledge ontology is limited to meta concepts, general, abstract or philosophical. Specific concepts in special fields are not included in the upper-level knowledge ontology. SUMO hopes to use the highest level of knowledge ontology to encourage other special field knowledge ontologies to be derived based on it, and to provide definitions for general multi-purpose terms.

SUMO was established to develop the standard upper knowledge ontology SUO (Standard Upper Ontology), promoting the development of data shareability, information retrieval, automated reasoning and natural language processing.
