As early as December 2018, Microsoft announced plans to develop a new Edge browser based on the Chromium open source project. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced the general availability of the new Edge browser, effectively replacing the old Edge browser. Now Microsoft is still urging users to switch and use the Chromium version of the Edge browser.
When opening Outlook.com on Google Chrome, Microsoft displays an ad telling users to download the new Chromium version of the Edge browser. The ad appears at the top of the Outlook web page and also provides an Edge download link. According to the ad, Outlook.com and the new Edge browser work better together.
This is definitely not the first time Microsoft has done such an advertisement. Microsoft recently placed an ad on the Windows 10 Start menu advising Firefox users to switch to the new Edge version.
In a similar incident, Google issued a warning to Edge users that in order to use Chrome extensions safely, users should switch to the Chrome browser. However, Google removed the banner days later. In its defense, Google said the banner alert was shown to Edge users because the new Microsoft Edge does not support Google's Safe Browsing feature, which essentially protects users from malicious extensions.
