Steam Music is a music player that can automatically search for audio tracks in games and is a good helper in games. The following is a graphic introduction to how to use Steam Music in Ubuntu.

Using Steam Music music player

Anyone using the latest version of the client can use the Steam Music player. It's a fairly simple add-on: it lets you add, browse and play music from your computer.

The player can be accessed in two ways: desktop and (awesome) Steam Big Picture mode. Controlling playback is super easy in both ways.

As a Rhythmbox rival or Spotify successor, having a feature designed to play music while playing games is not appealing at all. In fact, it doesn't have any store where you can buy music, and it doesn't integrate with online services like Rdio, Grooveshark, or desktop services. That's right, your multimedia keys don't work at all on Linux players.

Valve says they “…plan to add more features so users can experience Steam Music in new ways. We’re just getting started.”

Important features of Steam Music:

Only MP3 files can be played

Integrate with the music in the game

You can control music in the game

The player can be run on the desktop or in large picture mode

Playlist-based playback

It is not integrated into Ubuntu’s sound menu and currently does not support multimedia keys on the keyboard.

Using Steam Music Player on Ubuntu

Obviously, adding music is the first thing you do before playing music. On Ubuntu, under default settings, Steam will automatically add two folders: the standard Music directory under Home and its own Steam Music folder. Any downloadable audio tracks are saved there.

Note: Currently, Steam Music can only play MP3 files. If most of your music is in other file formats (such as .acc, .m4a, etc.), these files will not be added and cannot be played.

If you want to add other folders or rescan:

Go to View 》 Settings 》 Music.

Click ‘Add‘ to add folders in other locations to the list of two folders already listed.

Click ‘Start Scanning’

You can also adjust other settings in this dialog, including 'scan at start'. Mark this if you add new music frequently and easily forget to start a scan manually. You can also choose whether to display prompts when paths change, set a default volume, and adjust how playback status changes when you open an app or voice chat.

Once your music source is successfully added and scanned, you can browse your music through the Library > Music area of the main client.
