Android phone connection method:

Open settings. Press the Menu button and select Settings, or open the Settings application in the Applications pane.

Under "Wireless & Networks," click "Tethering & Portable Hotspots."

You may need to click "More settings" to find this option. Different Android systems may have different menu structures, but the general steps are the same.

Check the "USB Network Sharing" dialog box. This will start sending network data to your laptop. A blue connection icon will appear in the phone's notification bar.

iPhone connection method:

Activate a personal hotspot. Enable tethering through settings.

Click Settings, then Cellular.

In the hive menu, click Personal Hotspot. If your plan does not allow tethering, instructions are given for contacting your carrier.

Press the "Personal Hotspot" slider to the ON position.

Select a connection method. The default is to connect via USB only. If you want to connect via wireless (Wi-Fi) or Bluetooth, click the "Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth" button.
